EXCLUSIVE: Justin Chambers, an original Grey’s Anatomy cast member and a fan favorite, is leaving the hit medical drama, now in its sixteenth season on ABC.

Justin Chambers wrote:There’s no good time to say goodbye to a show and character that’s defined so much of my life for the past 15 years,” Chambers said in a statement to Deadline. “For some time now, however, I have hoped to diversify my acting roles and career choices. And, as I turn 50 and am blessed with my remarkable, supportive wife and five wonderful children, now is that time.

Chambers, who plays Dr. Alex Karev on the show, went on to acknowledge ABC/ABC Studios, Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes and the three remaining original cast members whom he has worked alongside since the pilot.

Justin Chambers wrote:As I move on from Grey’s Anatomy, I want to thank the ABC family, Shonda Rimes, original cast members Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson and James Pickens, and the rest of the amazing cast and crew, both past and present, and, of course, the fans for an extraordinary ride.

It is unclear when Chambers’s final episode will air and whether he will appear in more episodes; he was absent from the recent Grey’s Anatomy fall finale in November.

Chambers’ Dr. Alex Karev was introduced in the Grey’s series premiere as a surgical intern at Seattle Grace Hospital, eventually rising to resident and later becoming a pediatric surgical fellow.

Alex quickly become a fan favorite with his attentive skills in pediatrics and his compassionate nature with friends. Initially disliked by his fellow interns because of his brusque and dismissive manner with patients and co-workers, he earned their respect because of his profound skill for his specialty. His relationship with colleagues Meredith Grey (Pompeo), Christina Yang (Sandra Oh), Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl) and George O’Malley (T.R. Knight) in the early years became a focal point of the series.

His character went through two marriages, first to Heigl’s Izzie Stevens, and later, to intern Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington).

Now-former department head of pediatric surgery, Alex was fired for his part in Meredith’s (Pompeo) insurance fraud and was hired as Chief of Staff and Chief of Surgery at Pacific Northwest General Hospital.

Alex was last seen in Grey’s Anatomy 350th episode, which aired Nov. 14. In it, he left the hospital to take care of his sick mother.

Sixteen seasons in, Grey’s Anatomy, the longest-running medical drama on television, remains a ratings powerhouse. It again is ABC’s most watched and highest-rated series in adults 18-49 this season. Grey’s is currently in the middle of a two-season pickup through Season 17, with ABC Entertainment President Karey Burke recently voicing optimism that the series could go beyond that.

From Matt Webb Mitovich of TV Line

Ellen Pompeo has spoken: Justin Chambers’ unexpected exit from Grey’s Anatomy marks one of the long-running serial’s biggest losses.

TVLine on Jan. 10 confirmed that the final episode featuring Chambers, an original cast member, has already aired, back on Nov. 14. (In the following episode, viewers learned that Alex Karev had returned home to care for his ailing mother.) The fact that Chambers will not be given a proper onscreen sendoff suggests his departure came abruptly and without much notice.

On Saturday, nearly 24 hours after the news broke, Grey’s lead Pompeo commented on a Vanity Fair tweet which posited that ABC’s top-rated (and broadcast-TV’s No. 2 overall) drama “is about to feel one of its biggest losses yet,” saying: “Truer words have never been spoken” — her first comments on the matter.

In a Friday statement, Chambers himself said, “There’s no good time to say goodbye to a show and character that’s defined so much of my life for the past 15 years. “For some time now, however, I have hoped to diversify my acting roles and career choices. And, as I turn 50 and am blessed with my remarkable, supportive wife and five wonderful children, now is that time. As I move on from Grey’s Anatomy, I want to thank the ABC family, Shonda [Rhimes], original cast members Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson and James Pickens, and the rest of the amazing cast and crew, both past and present, and, of course, the fans for an extraordinary ride.”

    10. Father’s Day
Bless his broken heart, Alex gave deadbeat father Jimmy a happier ending than he deserved in Season 10’s “Take It Back.” Despite the fact that he was, in Karev’s estimation, a total “son of a bitch,” Alex still tried to get his old man’s subsequent family to visit him on his deathbed.

    9. ‘I Want Waffle Sundays’
Fearing he was prison-bound in Season 13’s “Roar,” Alex tried to look out for his person by suggesting waffle Sundays with Mer and her sisters until he got sent up the river. He also implored Grey to be nicer to them — even Amelia. “I’m not gonna always be around,” he said presciently.

    8. ‘I Do’ If by Sea
Forget Jolex’s Halloween wedding — the nuptials we’ll always remember are the ones that took place after disaster RSVP’d yes to their lavish ceremony in Season 14’s “All of Me,” so the beleaguered couple wound up being married by Mer on a ferry.

    7. ‘Stick With the Decent Guy’
Never again could Alex be called “devil spawn” after Season 3’s “Didn’t We Almost Have It All?” Despite his love for former amnesiac Ava, he did the hard thing, the right thing, breaking both their hearts to send her back to her life as Rebecca — and back to Rebecca’s husband.

    6. Mom’s the Word
Though it crushed Alex to discover that his mere presence could upset his mother’s hard-won routine in Season 14’s “Fight For Your Mind,” he worked through his anger to reach out to her in a way that would seem altogether ordinary to the librarian — by asking to get a library card.

    5. Friends… and Family
Following Mer’s assault in Season 12’s “The Sound of Silence,” Alex was there for her, going so far as to climb into her hospital bed to offer a shoulder to literally cry on. Against all odds, he even made her laugh when he noted, “You’ve got a lot of snot!”

    4. ‘Today’s the Day My Life Begins’
Borrowing liberally from a young patient’s graduation speech, Alex gave Izzie — and all of us — the feels with his wedding vows in Season 5’s “What a Difference a Day Makes.” “Today, Izzie Stevens, our life together begins,” he said, radiating love and sincerity, “and I for one can’t wait.”

    3. Once More, With Feeling
As Jo entered a mental-health facility for treatment in Season 16’s “Nothing Left to Cling to,” she was quick to note that she and Alex weren’t even legally married — he had an out. So when she was released, he got down on bended knee and re-proposed to assure her that he was all in.

    2. History Repeating
Rarely were the scars of Alex’s past more apparent or painfully rendered than in Season 4’s “Freedom, Part 2.” After Rebecca slit her wrists, he insisted to Izzie — pleaded with her to believe, really — that he could take care of her, in essence, doing for her what he’d done for his mother.

    1. Carried Away
Long before he became Mer’s person, Alex was, in many ways, Izzie’s. So when she couldn’t bear to leave late fiancé Denny’s bedside in Season 2’s “Losing My Religion,” it was Alex who carried her away and made us all wish we had a Karev in our corner.
