POINT: Trump is Walling Off the GOP. COUNTERPOINT: No Wall, No Peace
Page 1 of 1 • Share
Which do you side with?

Welcome to POINT -- COUNTERPOINT. In this and future posts, you will get two articles. One is an opinionated point, the other the counterpoint to the first. You get to decide which side you agree most with and drop your reasons why. I hope this will get you talking (civilly) about these issues without the name-calling and insults.
Our first official POINT -- COUNTERPOINT has to do with Donald Trump's sticking point: THE WALL. The Atlantic has an article entitled Trump is Walling Off the GOP as their point. The Counterpoint comes from The New York Times which is entitled, No Wall, No Peace.
NOTE: The opinions in these articles are the authors, as published by the source, and do not necessarily represent the views of Bethea's Byte.
Check out both and you drop your opinions here.

Ronald Brownstein wrote:
The most misleading line in Donald Trump’s State of the Union address this week may have also been the most revealing about how he is reconfiguring the Republican Party and reshaping America’s electoral alignment.
“Legal immigrants enrich our nation and strengthen our society in countless ways,” he declared at one point. “I want people to come into our country, in the largest numbers ever, but they have to come in legally.”

Christopher Buskirk wrote:
President Trump lost a big one when he caved to Nancy Pelosi’s demand on the spending bill. Does that mean that “it’s all over for Trump,” as headlines have regularly blared? No. But it does mean that until he reasserts his authority, the locus of power is with the speaker and not with the president. Power unused is power lost. It’s a political truth that Democrats understand and Republicans pretend doesn’t exist.

Now the opinions are left to you. Which way do you see this. Do you side with the Point or Counterpoint. Vote and drop in your commentary. I look forward to reading and responding to you.

I honestly cannot believe women are for Trump.
From what I have read especially regarding abortion and contraception, he is anything for women.

Read both articles, then vote and tell why you decided to side with the Point or Counterpoint.

Even though I am undecided, No Wall, No Peace is right up Trumps alley.

Great idea for a series
!
Having read them both, I think both the 'point' and the 'counterpoint' have some truth to them, although I find myself agreeing more with the 'counterpoint'. The 'point' seems to be that "Trump's rhetoric and strategy of playing to the base is alienating swing groups from the GOP" - and, while that may be true in the short term (and it'll be very bad news for Trump in particular), I expect the GOP will figure out a way to win them back once he's out of office. The 'counterpoint' seems to be that "If Trump abandons his political base, then he's committing political suicide" - and, that definitely seems to be true. If Trump fails to deliver the wall, then I expect many of his loyal supporters will be mad at him. Sure, they'll still vote for him - but they'll do so reluctantly, and what they won't do is bring five friends and family members to the polling station to vote with them. And, since he won such a narrow victory in 2016, he really doesn't have much margin for error.
